And what was the biggest beauty trend of the Met Gala 2021? App worship. Whether it was rhinestones and crystals, glitter or pearls, every celeb from Rihanna to Ella Emhoff sported some sort of sparkling embellishment on their face or hair (or both).
And what could be more American than “more is more”? In keeping with the theme of the gala, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, attendees were inspired by golden Hollywood hair and makeup as well as numerous American icons, such as Marilyn Monroe and Anna May Wong. Thus, the great beauty trend of the night brought an extra bit of cinematic glamor to the red carpet.
Storm Reid, Ella Emhoff, and Julia Garner decorated the eye area with applications—sometimes even in lieu of makeup—to enhance the look. While Reid's tiny pearls outlined her graphic eyeshadow in graphic strokes, Garner's glittery studs served as feline eyeliner.
When it came to hairstyles, there were even more flashy embellishments. The oversized ponytail worn by Precious Lee was further magnified by the strands of pearls she wore pinned to her braids. While Gigi Hadid, also in a ponytail, wore a simple Prada diamond barrette to accentuate her updo.
