The strange origins of the five most used garments

Fashion comes and goes. However, there are garments that have been incorporated centuries ago but little is known about their origins.

Studs

In the 16th century, high heels were displayed on the feet of both men and women. The height of this shoe was desirable because it generated status, since it meant being above others. The higher they were, the more they demonstrated their privileges and power.

The chopine was the most used model due to its heel and platform. Aristocratic women were fans of this type of shoe because they wore very long dresses that also symbolized their social class.

The thong

Considered a sensual garment, they were created to stop the exhibitionism of the time.

Thongs are said to have originated in New York, around the end of the Great Depression. Fiorello LaGuardia, the mayor of this city, ordered in 1939 that the exotic dancers cover up a little more because of the large number of tourists waiting for the World's Fair. This was the beginning of underwear.

Bodice

Mary Phelps Jacobs was a 19-year-old girl at the turn of the 20th century. Mary was preparing for her debutante ball when she experienced the horror of any woman before an important night: her dress was ill fitting and her corset was showing through her clothes.

The dresses of that era were slim, for square bodies and with plunging necklines, which put Mary and her voluptuousness in a bind. So Mary put her wits to work to solve the problem and she sewed two of her handkerchiefs out of pink fabric.

The result was a prototype of the brassier, which had an effect similar to that of the corset, but with greater freedom of movement. On November 3, 1914, Mary officially patented her invention.

Stockings

One of the earliest pairs of socks comes from Egypt, from 400 to 500 B.C. This garment had a practical function until the Middle Ages, when they became another status symbol.

The curious thing is that this first model of stockings had a separation between the thumb and the rest of the fingers to be worn with sandals.

The sandals

They appeared in the West after World War II. American troops considered the Japanese one of their biggest enemies, but that didn't stop them from falling in love with their flip-flops.

Since most shoes were closed-toed until then, seeing someone walking calmly down the street in sandals was somewhat scandalous because it was casual. Even half an exhibitionist. But that didn't stop this shoe from gaining mass acceptance and becoming a must-have item in American closets.
