Vaginal candidiasis: what it is and how to warn it – Ministry of Public Health of Tucumán

Dr. Flavia Quinteros, an obstetrician and gynecologist, explained that it is a fungus that is part of the normal vaginal flora of the vagina's microbiota, which at times can cause bothersome symptoms for women.

The specialist said that it is not usually a sexually transmitted infection, it only causes discomfort in those who suffer from candida and does not distinguish the age of the patient who suffers from it. Regarding the symptoms that patients may notice, she mentioned: itching of the vagina, burning to urinate and presence of white discharge.

The obstetrician and gynecologist assured that what is important in this matter are hygienic and dietary measures, since there are factors that predispose to infection, such as excessive washing, use of daily protectors, use of lycra underwear, use of chemically scented soaps, among others. "In this sense, the patient must be educated so that she takes these precautions into account and maintains the normal PH of the vagina, so that the infection does not recur."

The treatments that are carried out for this are topical antifungals, that is, with vaginal creams or ovules, and they can also be taken orally.

Finally, the doctor recommended that those who believe they have candidiasis, do not opt for self-medication and consult a specialist, because there are many drugs that are not indicated for these cases. In addition, she asserted that when taking antibiotics without medical supervision, the patient can cause long-term resistance if the complete and timely treatment is not carried out.
