There are countless beliefs associated with menstruation: “don't take a bath”, “don't make mayonnaise” and, of course, “don't have sex when you're on your period”. All false.

As the psychologist and sexologist Laura Morán explains, "this is due to misinformation about menstruation because we live in a society focused on the masculine and where everything that has to do with women's health has been investigated very little until now" .

Morán also clarifies that being a process related to blood, menstruation causes a lot of apprehension . "This, together with ignorance, makes menstruation socially reviled", she adds, "even many women and people who menstruate feel it as something dirty, when it is not".

For these reasons, linking menstruation with a positive pleasure practice such as sex can be complicated, but nothing could be further from the truth because, "apart from the fact that menstruating is a natural process that should be seen that way, having sexual intercourse or masturbating during those days it has multiple benefits .”

The benefits of sex during menstruation

The first of these benefits is the well-being that sexual pleasure produces . "It is proven that sexual intercourse and masturbation are healthy practices, why are we going to deprive ourselves of it during menstruation?" Asks the sexologist.

¿Por qué es bueno el sexo cuando estás con la regla?

Arousal and orgasm produce an analgesic effect that can relieve menstrual cramps. "Although the period should not be painful, another associated myth, if there was any discomfort, it could be reduced by having sex or with masturbation," says Morán, and explains that "orgasm produces chemical reactions in the brain that raise levels of analgesia".

Menstruation can also serve as a natural lubricant that adds to the lubrication that always occurs with arousal. There may also be an increase in sexual desire during the period of menstruation, although as the expert clarifies, "this can vary depending on the person, and is usually conditioned by the practice itself: as we get excited, that sexual appetite grows".

Sex, period and also possible pregnancy

Therefore, you can have sexual intercourse while menstruating without any problem. “Mainly you have to want to, knowing that it is not an impediment, although it may not always appear to you, this must also be taken into account,” says Morán, who also recalls that sexual relations are not only based on intercourse.

“And if you have a coital relationship, you have to assume without much concern that the penis or the condom will come out stained with blood ”, she adds. "If we prefer that the discharge is not present, we can use a tampon or a menstrual cup or sponge, and expand our range of ways to enjoy."

The sexologist also denies another urban legend related to vaginal hygiene. “Douching is often recommended for intercourse with or without menstruation. I usually joke to dismantle this myth: vaginas are like pyrolytic ovens, they clean themselves. Do not use any syringe with water, or wash with a pressure jet; what you have to wash is the vulva, the outer part, but like you clean any other part of the body, ”she explains.

Finally, Morán recalls that having sex during menstruation does not prevent unwanted pregnancies.

“Many people think that with the period you cannot get pregnant, but it is not like that. Although it is more likely to get pregnant on the days of ovulation, which are in the middle of the cycle, we are fertile every day of the year, so you have to use protection in the same way even when you have your period, ”she concludes.
