Here we are in 2022, and the practice of blaming women for their clothes is still alive and cooling.Olivia Culpo, a former Miss Universe, recently addressed a flight from American Airlines to Mexico using a crop top with an exposed stomach and tight cyclist shorts, along with a long cardigan. This lovely young man was informed that he had to "cover" himself or would not be allowed to fly.In the end, Olivia borrowed a sweatshirt from her boyfriend and continued her trip.In fact, several airlines have become the police police in recent years, usually for their passengers.

If you turn around the youth department of any clothing store, you will undoubted. As the mother of two daughters, I spent a good part of the time out of dressing rooms while my teenage daughters tested clothes. There were times when I had to bite my tongue to avoid saying the word with "i" (inappropriate) when they emerged, wearing so confident and happy. But I always let them do, because their self -esteem was more important than any passing discomfort that I could feel. And even if the very revealing styles were not of their preference, there were many occasions when these articles were the only options on the shelves.

I also work in a church and have directed 18 missionary trips with high school students over the years. Most of the time, organizations sent their clothing codes in advance, listing what could be dressed and what not during volunteering. Some stipulations made a lot of sense (no t -shirts with hate language), while others left you confused (no sleeveless shirts, shorts had.The rules, they would say, came from the desire that the groups fit into a different culture, be respectful of the most modest norms of, say, Guatemala.

But buying proper clothes was a nightmare. There were two years of the 18 in which the Bermuda were fashionable. The rest of the time, we had to search in second -hand stores, hoping to find something suitable.Another universal requirement were the swimsuits of one piece (each trip included a swimming afternoon).None of the girls had one of these, and even the tankinis were prohibited, so, again, it was a problem to get them.

Ironically, when we got to the place, local young people almost always wore the same short shorts, sleeves without sleeves and bikinis that were prohibited for our girls. Our mission teams were those who looked out of place.

What made these lists be irritating was the excessive emphasis on what the girls could or could not wear, without almost mentioning the boys' clothing. At a time when girls feel more vulnerable, these standards told them that their elections were unacceptable.Meanwhile, around him, movies and television ads showed women of their age watching precisely this clothes. The message seemed to be: “This is the clothes available to buy.But you shouldn't wear them ".And, of course, these types of concerns about the offer of the men's department do not arise.

I am a girl from the 1960s, and I remember spending the money I earned taking care of children in the fashion.Even then, I realized the double standard, and I hoped that my daughters did not have to face the same one day.

In life, there are many legitimate and practical reasons to wear certain clothes (health uniforms for medical staff, for example) and not to wear certain items (no jewelry that can be trapped in machines if you work in a factory). But when we tell our girls that the same garments that designers are creating and offering them are too “sexy” (which implies that boys have zero self -control and that girls should not expect them to have it), we perpetuate a significant problem inOur society: the relative lack of will of women.

Women should have the right to control their bodies, and that includes how those bodies wear. There is no excuse to objectify them on the one hand and criticize them hard by the other.

The real problem is not seeing a woman's stomach on a plane. We should apply a standard for all, or better yet, relax the standards of appearance completely, and focus instead on the inner person.I hope that my future granddaughter can choose the garments that make her feel good about themselves, and that society finally learns to deal with her own matters.
