One of the new most interesting stories that appeared in the San Diego Comic-with involves the return of Batman's classic suit.Within Batman #53, which will be launched next month, the night knight will return to his pre-flashpoint attire, with out-of-out underwear and everything.This comes scarce months after Superman brought his red underwear back.While this might seem completely irrelevant, superficial changes to iconic character, these modifications represent a very important change in the way of telling superhero stories.
Batman and Superman's underwear were low within the relaunch of New 52 in 2011, with the artist Jim Lee at the head of the designs that removed underwear in favor of a more functional approach.In general, superhero suits have left behind the circus air that the golden era presented us, and, clearly, DC felt that both characters needed a much more modern appearance.The problem with these re-design is that they failed to improve the established formula.The outfit of both characters felt like something, and that is that the underpants added an extra dose of contrast.DC has debuted multiple re-design for some years, but between Action Comics #1000 and Batman #53, it seems that they finally tired of trying to replace the classics.
The return of these old costumes is important, since they represent an important change in the company within recent years.New 52 can be considered as a loose attempt.However, despite attempts to improve and increase the level of its comic line, New 52 always felt a bit forced.Apparently, DC is aware and even ashamed of the quality of some of the regular series of its most iconic superheroes.Superman's change to armor makes very little sense, especially considering that the character is already approved of bullets, why would he need a special armor?
New 52 also erased a good portion of the story established within the DC universe.Not only Batman and Superman received new attire, but these were presented as the only ones that both used during their superhero career.The underpants faded in the air, along with all the classic stories and important relationships.
DC Rebirth goal has been to solve these continuity errors and restore everything lost within the DC universe.The return of classic costumes is a tangible sign of this change.DC is no longer so aware of his past.There is great acceptance of the idea that heroes do not need to be extreme to fit.And recognizing that these outfits existed, DC is also recognizing the stories that New 52 ventured under the table.In recent numbers, Tom King's Batman has explored Batman and Catwoman's relationship over different decades.King and his artists are bringing Batman back: Year One and Hush, stories that could not have been considered a year or two ago.For the first time since the time of Grant Morrison with Batman, a series writer manages to make references and fully explore the franchise.
Regardless of whether you prefer Batman's classic suit or the outfit presented at Rebirth, the return of the outside underpants is a great signal.
