This is how MotoGP rookies debuted in Jerez: Raúl Fernández, the best; Darryn Binder, in Moto2's time

MotoGP 2022 has already begun. Jerez hosted the traditional post-season test of the queen category of the World Cup with the best time for Takaaki Nakagami with the new Honda RC213V, which gives good signs of the birth of the HRC bike, although it is still too early to draw conclusions.

The most interesting thing about this first day of testing is how it has been the adaptation of the rookies in their first contact with the MotoGP. And we've already had a clue of what we can expect this season: while Raúl Fernández was in very dignified times, Darryn Binder rolled slower than the Moto2.

Raúl Fernández beat Kallio, Guintoli and Savadori, experienced testers

Raúl Fernández was the best rookie of the day. KTM's new driver stopped the time at 1: 39,083 to finish the test in the 19th position, just behind Andrea Dovizioso and ahead not only of the rest of the rookies, but also of experienced tester pilots such as Mika Kallio, Sylvain Guintoli or Lorenzo Savadori.

It is true that Fernandez, like Remy Gardner, was not strictly on his first day with a MotoGP, as they tested the KTM in the Misano test during the season. But Fernandez's times are still very promising and demonstrate the adaptability of Spanish.

The second best rookie was Fabio Di Giannantonio, who finished the twenty-second, ahead of Savadori but behind Kallio and Guintoli. His best time was 1: 39,628, six tenths of Fernandez, and that was flying a Ducati. The Italian is running this season in the ranks of Gresini Racing.

Twenty-fourth, with a time of 1: 40,170 finished Remy Gardner, who also had a minimal experience with the Tech3 motorcycle in Misano but still stayed more than a second from Fernández. Right behind him ended Marco Bezzecchi, also with the Ducati and in a time of 1: 40,732.

But the drama came with Darryn Binder. The South African pilot demonstrated why his direct ascent from Moto3 to MotoGP was so controversial. He finished last of the session, even behind Takuya Tsuda, the Japanese who serves as a durability tester in Suzuki. Binder's time was 1: 41,749.

In fact, Binder was eight tenths from Tsuda and a second from Bezzecchi, the next rookie. His time was not only slower than Moto2's last pole position in Jerez, which marked Gardner at 1: 40,667, but that better lap would not even have improved the lap of the intermediate category motorcycles. A lot to improve.
