A hotel among the mountains in the style of "the Shining"

Banff.- nature can be as beautiful as it can be intimidating. That goes through my mind as I wander through the hotel, surrounded by an immense forest. The crudest phase of winter is over, although the lake in front of the property remains frozen. I can't help thinking that in these very long aisles, the sinister twins of "the Shining" can appear.

By the end of May, this glacial lake will have a bright turquoise blue tone, irresistible of kayaking. It is Lake Louise, one of the most famous postcards in Banff National Park in Canada, the oldest in the country, in the midst of Rocky Mountains.

My hotel is Fairmont Château Lake Louise and is over 100 years old. For four decades it remained closed during the winter. Only one person stayed to take care of him, as if it were the Overlook Hotel, of the novel "the Shining" and its film adaptation. The nearest village is four kilometres away and the city of Calgary is two hours away. The place is known for its luxury and the gastronomy of its five restaurants.

Day one I get ready for my first ski lesson at Lake Louise resort. He was named the best complex of his kind in Canada a few months ago, at the World Ski Awards. In many destinations the snow season is almost over, but here it extends until the beginning of May.

My encounter with skis is not successful. You Don't need to be an athlete, but you do have a little strength in your legs and courage to descend without panic and lose balance. I must acknowledge my instructor's patience: it must not be easy to get out of the snow so many times.

I give up and I'm going to practice tubing, slide over frozen tracks on top of a little tire, like a slide.

Google will let you know if your flight is delayed, before the airline does.

Day two an hour is the town of Banff. It has the whole look of a community with a mining past, but it was conceived as a tourist destination in the late 19th century, as part of the legendary Canadian Pacific Railway route.

It is a very small village, surrounded by mountains, rivers and waterfalls. For its inhabitants it is not uncommon to see a deer cross its garden.

The avenue is crowded with shops and restaurants. Many shops offer thermal clothing, elegant jackets and snow accessories. There are sweets that sell delights like "bear claws": chocolate-covered cookies, with nail nuts.

Local cuisine is a dream for those who love cheeses and charcutería. It also uses beef and bison. One of the most famous restaurants is Park distillery, which produces its own vodka and gin, and offers tours of its distillery.

On the outskirts is the Fairmont Banff springs Hotel. Built shortly before the last century, with the architecture of a huge Scottish castle. Its fame has been awarded its luxury spa. It is said that a woman dressed as a bride appears on the stairs and that there is an employee in clothes from another era who refuses to leave his job.

How much does it cost to travel in the Chepe?

Day three the best view of the village, the forest and glaciers, is 2,000 meters high. The viewpoint is reached in eight minutes aboard a gondola. There is another alternative: a wooden path that leads to the top of the mountain. At this point, snow feels like the finest dust I've ever touched.

You should not stop going to Cave and Basin: hot springs on the slopes of a mountain. One of them is inside a cave. The Banff National Park was created by these waters.

I go back to the fascinated hotel, but I still Don't want to be one of the caretakers of this place away from everything.
