A friend told me that she loved November. His birthday is this month, and he likes how time changes every day, giving the possibility of delighting us with the new clothing of nature. For her, the month is like a crossing point between golden autumn and white winter. The leaves fall but all the experience gives us a sense of imminent change and new beginnings: a peace condition that you can hug, while you think about life, sitting with your tea or buzzing through empty streets...That is what my friend said, at least.
Sounds poetic, right?
Well no.It seems to me a real fool.It is the first time in my life that someone praises November instead of saying that it makes you want to curl up and die.
Let me explain it to you.
Why is it so horrible?
Russia is quite large, as you know.In November there are many regions, such as the Urals, Siberia and other northern territories, which have winter in full swing, with a lot of snow. However, things are different the more west and/or south. For example, in Moscow. The snow has not yet arrived, or melts so fast that you never feel that magical Christmas spirit. And, to worsen things, it's very cold and darkens soon.
The Russians pass most of November in the most absolute darkness.Imagine: you get up to go to work and it's dark.At 5:30 in the afternoon, when you return to work, it is dark again.Ah, and have I mentioned the cold?It is that type of cold that you cannot foresee.Yesterday you were cheerful, with a light coat, and made a sun of +10 ℃...And today it is very cold, and suddenly they look carambic everywhere, including nose.
"It's not so much!" Some of you will tell me without a doubt. But November has another ace in the sleeve: strong and fierce winds, which penetrate clothes to the skin.As a Moscow website says in its weather forecast: "The wind will start the flesh of the moscovitas".
So imagine it.The leaves have fallen and the trees remain naked, the gloomy lead sky seems so low that it could be centimeters from your head. The "romantic" rain of November suddenly becomes a million cold and sharp arrows that try to go through all directions (thanks to the wind), and there are no umbrella that resists such a assault.

But is winter better?
A fair question.Let me make me meticulous:
- When everything is covered with snow, it feels hotter. In addition, snow makes all the outside seem brighter.Even at night, it reflects the ugly artificial lighting and everything seems more cheerful.
- With the arrival of winter, one gets used to the cold little by little and begins to dress more warm.
- And then, of course, there are Christmas and New Year decorations, which help to cope with the sad reality.
How to face the month of November in Russia?
Long live the Russian central heating system. Thanks to him, the houses are already warm and hot in mid -September (they light the heating if the average temperature remains around 8 cº for five consecutive days). But it also has its bad side. While inside you can wear shorts, you have to wear several layers of clothes for the recreational November walks. The constant transitions are a huge headache.
This is my friend's advice, who walks 10 km a day whatever happens: warm! It's simple, but great. When it does not snow, some people do not think they need to wear winter coats.Yes, put the feathers coat, do not forget the hat, the scarf and the gloves. Finally, cover your ankles!Wearing comfortable and warm footwear is an intelligent idea.

Any physical activity will give you the joy you need so much these days.Go to the gym, sweat and stretch at home, make yoga, do meditation, breathing exercises and other things that advise on Instagram. Some really work.
The home must be your cozy refuge, so light some candles, drink tea and coconut, read those Hygge books for which everyone is crazy.Little by little the apples for your dacha...and cakes...Bake cakes.
Some Russians go to warmer countries during November, but we are not going to promote these acts of cowardice. If by chance you are in Russia at this time of year, you have to tighten your teeth, put your face in a bad mood and accept it.After all, winter is just around the corner. And during holidays places like Moscow and St. Petersburg are in some of the most holiday moments of the year.
