BMW introduced a car that changes color depending on the weather

The BMW firm presented its new high-end car that changes color. As if it were a screen and not a vehicle plate, the brand new BMW iX Flow takes just a few seconds to change from white to gray or vice versa, depending on its owner's preference. This new function is an evolution of the electric SUV iX model, which the firm launched on the market in 2021.

Although the function is almost completely aesthetic, the design that uses a technology never seen before in the field can be used to recognize the car more easily on some occasions. Not only does its color change, but a "game" can be made between the two colors and in moments, the car can have both.

"The car is a form of expression, not only from the inside but from the outside, so we have tried to create a technology and adapt it in a way that allows the car to do that," said Christoph, Senior Vice President of Electronics at BMW. Grote.

Meanwhile, the BMW iX Flow intends to change color depending on the weather or the mood of the person who drives it. "We change our clothes in the morning, we choose what status to put on social networks and we choose the color of our car," they say in a promotional video of the company.

In this way, the range of colors is expected to expand beyond white or gray. However, the car is not yet for sale: it is only a product presentation and not a market launch.

The car uses an electrophoretic technology, that is, a layer with millions of microcapsules in it that have white pigment with a negative charge and black, with a positive charge. Thus, the car will have the necessary sensitivity to push the pigments, depending on the situation, towards the outermost part of the surface.

That is why the weather will also change the color: it will be lighter when temperatures are higher. From BMW they explained that this pigmentation would help thermal regulation and make the vehicle more efficient.
