Let's face it, motocross is never going to win the prize to be the queen of popularity at the big motorcycling party. In fact, a large part of the bikers, let alone those who are not, would not even be able to identify the acronym MXGP as corresponding to the premier category of motocross.

This is the starting point from which Milestone has to start to launch each season a new edition of its thematic video game about the World Cup, in this case the MXGP 2021. A very niche game that lacks some depth, but above all he knows his audience perfectly and respects it.

MXGP 2021 offers instant enjoyment, but lacks depth

Betting on visual simplicity is already a house brand in Milestone's motorcycle video games. We find it in RIDE 4, also in the successive versions of MotoGP games and now also in MXGP. The first thing you think when you find the first interface of the game is that you are going to find an arcade, but nothing is further from reality.

MXGP 2021 is a complicated game that is challenging. You have to be quite seasoned in this motocross thing to go up through the different levels of difficulty that the game offers you, and they are very well adjusted. In the early days it's hard to even be competitive on the easiest of them.

When facing a motocross video game, it is essential to be quite precise when calculating the behavior of the motorcycle in contact with the ground, and MXGP 2021 achieves this. The circuits are perfectly recreated, the behavior of the bike is quite realistic and completing a lap without errors is not so easy.

Although there is a remedy for that, since Milestone incorporates the usual rewind button, which was in other games in the house. Always controversial among players, the options allow you to disable it for those who don't want to use it, so it's a positive addition for newer players who do need it. It brings playability, and that's always good.

Another point in favor of MXGP 2021 is the behavior of the AI. The rival pilots are not just harmless extras that accompany the player, but really have conflicting behaviors, they are one more variable to play with. If you're not going fast enough, they'll pass you to the right, left, or even over the top.

On PS5, which is how we have tested the MXGP 2021, there is also a quality detail that is very worthwhile. The controller triggers, with which the brake and accelerator are controlled, tighten and loosen according to the area of the circuit that is being traversed, which provides a certain sensation of realism and an extra difficulty.

How could it be otherwise in a game of this type, MXGP 2021 has all the world championship licenses, and therefore all the circuits and riders, both MXGP and MX2. There is a 'Trajectory' mode in which you can live your own professional career starting from the smallest category, although choosing a motorcycle. Although it may not be very welcome that this type of game comes out with the real world already finished.

To talk about something that we didn't like about MXGP 2021 we can also start with the 'Trajectory' mode, which is quite confusing, something that also happened with the MotoGP saga and that didn't happen in RIDE 4. in need of being better located to know what is happening at all times, and what is coming now.

Also, MXGP 2021 is not too deep a game. Rather the other way around, with one afternoon you already realize everything it can offer you. Without going to the crazy extremes of other sports video game sagas like FIFA or NBA 2K, it would be nice if MXGP 2021 gave you something more than just running races. The format of the actual competition doesn't help either.

In short, a game that knows its limitations well and also its audience. It offers exactly what one of the few MXGP fanatics will be looking for, although some didactics may be missing for those who are not so seasoned in a category that, after all, is still a minority. In any case, MXGP 2021 is very enjoyable. An instant fun game.
